Even when mornings feel slightly cooler, daytime temperatures can quickly become dangerous for pets.

Heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when a dog’s body temperature rises and they can no longer cool themselves effectively. Any dog can overheat, but certain pets require extra precautions.

Dogs at Higher Risk

Brachycephalic, or short-nosed breeds have greater difficulty cooling themselves through panting. These include:

French Bulldogs

English Bulldogs

Pugs

Boston Terriers

Boxers

Shih Tzus

Pekingese

Older dogs, overweight dogs, thick-coated breeds, and pets with heart disease, respiratory disease, or limited mobility are also at increased risk.

Clinical Signs of Overheating and Heatstroke

Early recognition is extremely important. Monitor your dog for:

Excessive or persistent panting

Heavy drooling

Seeking shade or refusing to continue walking

Restlessness, whining, or anxiety

Bright red or unusually pale gums

Noisy, difficult, or labored breathing

Weakness or unsteadiness

Vomiting or diarrhea, which may contain blood

Confusion or disorientation

Collapse

Tremors or seizures

Heatstroke can rapidly damage the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, brain, and clotting system. Do not wait to see whether severe signs improve on their own.

What to Do if Your Dog Is Overheating

Immediately move your dog into air conditioning or a shaded, well-ventilated area. Begin cooling with cool—not ice-cold—water, and use a fan or your car’s air conditioning during transport. Avoid covering your dog with wet towels because they may trap heat against the body.

Most importantly, contact a veterinarian and begin traveling to the hospital immediately. Home cooling is not a substitute for veterinary treatment, even if your dog appears to improve.

Preventing Heatstroke in Florida

Schedule walks for the early morning or evening.

Keep outdoor activity short on hot or humid days.

Bring fresh water and offer frequent breaks.

Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle.

Avoid hot pavement, which can also burn paw pads.

Keep brachycephalic dogs indoors as much as possible during peak heat.

Use a harness instead of putting pressure on the neck of a short-nosed dog.

Stop activity at the first sign of excessive panting or breathing difficulty.

Paws Veterinary Clinic Is Here When You Need Us

If you are concerned that your dog may be overheating or experiencing heatstroke, treat it as an emergency.
