Our M-VET laser provides Class IV laser therapy as a noninvasive addition to your pet’s care. Treatment delivers a controlled dose of light to selected tissues with the goal of easing discomfort and supporting recovery. We tailor each plan to your dog or cat’s condition and needs. 1,2

How therapeutic laser light works

The treatment process is called photobiomodulation. Near-infrared light is absorbed by components within tissues and can influence cell activity and signals involved in inflammation, pain, and repair. The aim is to produce biological effects without cutting tissue. Some warmth can occur, so our team monitors the treatment area and your pet’s response throughout the session. 1,3

Why we may recommend treatment

To assist recovery after injury or surgery. Following an injury or procedure, laser therapy may help ease soreness and reduce localized inflammation and swelling. At PAWS, we may add treatment to your pet’s recovery plan to support comfort during healing and make prescribed rehabilitation exercises easier to tolerate. 7,8

To help manage pain and support mobility.

For pets with arthritis, joint stiffness, or muscle discomfort, laser therapy may help make everyday activities more comfortable. Our goals include easier rising, more comfortable walks, and better tolerance of gentle movement. We focus on improvements that matter to your pet’s daily life. 4,7,8

To support tissue healing:

By influencing cellular activity involved in tissue repair, laser therapy may support healing in selected wounds and surgical incisions. It may also help ease discomfort and inflammation around the affected area. We use it alongside wound care and follow-up tailored to your pet’s needs. 3,6,7

To add another option to pain management:

Laser therapy gives us another way to support comfort without administering an additional oral medication. It can be combined with prescribed pain relief, weight management, rehabilitation, and changes at home. At PAWS, we build a plan around your pet’s needs and adjust it based on how they feel and function. 2,8

What happens during a visit to PAWS?

We first examine your pet, review the medical history, and choose the treatment area and protocol. A trained member of our veterinary team then applies the laser using a handpiece. Contact or noncontact application, with scanning or point-by-point treatment, is selected according to the tissue and protocol. 1,11 Many pets tolerate treatment while awake. Mild warmth may be felt, but treatment should remain comfortable. The appointment length depends on the size and number of areas being treated and the prescribed dose. A small treatment area may take only a few minutes. Our team watches for sensitivity, restlessness, or excessive heat and adjusts treatment as needed. 11,12

Laser therapy for cats

Our feline patients deserve the same attention to comfort and mobility. Cats may receive treatment, although the evidence base is smaller than for dogs. We tailor the plan to your cat’s condition, size, and tolerance of handling. A quiet setting and gentle approach help make visits more manageable. 2,3

Treatment schedules and realistic expectations

There is no universal number of sessions. We may recommend an initial course followed by
reassessment, with further treatment based on your pet’s response. Together, we can choose
practical goals, such as easier rising or more comfortable movement. Your notes and short videos
from home can help us assess progress. 2,11
A pet that feels better may still need restricted activity while healing. Continue the recovery
instructions we provide, and ask us when exercise can safely increase. If your dog or cat is
uncomfortable or recovering from an injury, contact PAWS Veterinary Clinic to discuss whether laser
therapy could be a useful addition to care. Our goal is to help your pet enjoy everyday life more
comfortably. 2

Conditions we may include in a laser therapy plan:

Depending on the diagnosis, laser therapy may help manage pain, inflammation, swelling, or stiffness associated with the conditions below. Evidence varies by condition, and these are potential supportive uses rather than a guarantee of improvement. 3,7

Recovery after spay/neuter surgery. Tenderness, swelling, and inflammation around the surgical incision and surrounding tissues during healing.

Recovery after dental procedures. Gum inflammation and oral discomfort following dental extractions or other oral surgery.

Skin and ear conditions. Wounds, burns, and otitis that can cause localized inflammation, irritation, and discomfort.

Cystitis. Inflammation of the bladder that cause discomfort, frequent urination, and straining.

Arthritis and arthrosis. Joint inflammation and degenerative joint disease that can cause stiffness and discomfort.

Edema, inflammation, and pain. Localized swelling and tissue irritation associated with injury, surgery, or other diagnosed conditions.

Fractures. Supportive care for surrounding tissue pain and swelling during recovery. Broken bones still require appropriate stabilization and follow-up.

Sprains and strains. Injuries involving ligaments, muscles, or tendons, with treatment aimed at comfort during rehabilitation.

Tendonitis and desmitis. Inflammation of tendons or ligaments that may contribute to pain and reduced mobility.

Contractures and trigger points. Muscle or soft tissue tightening that limits movement, and localized tender areas within muscles. Treatment may support comfort alongside an individualized rehabilitation plan.

Bursitis and hygromas. Selected cases involving local inflammation or discomfort. For hygromas, cushioning and pressure relief remain essential. 7,9

IVDD (intervertebral disc disease). An additional option for discomfort in selected cases. Evidence for improved neurologic recovery is limited; activity restriction, medication, and surgery when indicated remain central to care.

Sources:

Clinical research and professional resources supporting this article.
